Maverick Uranium (ASX: MAV) - IPO Review of an Athabasca Basin Uranium Explorer
The Maverick Uranium IPO offers 37.5 million shares at A$0.20 to raise A$7.5 million. The money pays for exploration on three uranium projects in and beside the Athabasca Basin in northern Saskatchewan, Canada, one of the world's highest-grade uranium districts.

Maverick Uranium Limited (proposed ASX: MAV) is raising A$7.5 million at A$0.20 a share in an upcoming ASX IPO. The offer closes at 5:00pm Perth time on Monday 2 November 2026, and quotation is expected on Thursday 12 November [R1]. The chair, Wyatt Buck, once ran the McArthur River mine and Key Lake mill for Cameco. John Borshoff, named in the IPO presentation as the founder of Paladin Energy [R5], is strategic adviser and will hold 5.57 per cent of the shares on listing [R1].

At A$0.20 the 77,228,593 shares on issue at listing are worth A$15.4 million [R1]. Pro forma cash after the offer is A$6,863,478 [R4].
The lead manager, PAC Partners Securities, receives a 6 per cent fee on the money raised, 1,000,000 shares at A$0.001 each and 2,250,000 options exercisable at A$0.30 within four years [R1].
Three Uranium Projects in the Athabasca Basin
Maverick's three projects are on the eastern side of the Athabasca Basin, a bowl of flat-lying sandstone covering about 104,000 square kilometres, laid over much older crystalline rock (FIG. 01) [R2]. Its uranium deposits form at or near the base of the sandstone, a surface geologists call the unconformity, or along faults in the basement rock below.

Maverick is buying 100 per cent of Enriched Metals and Nucleus Metals, which own the Canadian subsidiaries holding the claims, for 21,500,000 shares [R1]. The three projects cover 26 granted mineral claims and about 867 square kilometres (FIG. 02). A Saskatchewan claim gives the right to explore. Work on the ground needs separate permits [R3]. None of the projects has a JORC Mineral Resource, the formal estimate of tonnes and grade [R1].

Newnham Lake, Drilling Through the Sandstone
Newnham Lake covers 295 square kilometres inside the north-eastern edge of the basin [R2]. The target is under sandstone about 170 to 280 metres thick in the centre of the project and more than 400 metres in the south-west, so only drilling can test it.
Nine holes were drilled in 1970 and 1980 (FIG. 03), before the modern methods now used to find the chemical and clay signals around a deposit [R2]. They did not intersect uranium mineralisation, and two stopped before reaching the unconformity. Recharge Metals (ASX: REC) is exploring the Newnham Lake Zone about 11 kilometres along trend, though the report says no geological link between the two is established or implied [R2].

Maverick has budgeted A$2,878,000 for Newnham Lake over two years [R1], and the independent geologist proposes about 3,350 metres of diamond drilling in the first year [R2]. Before drilling, a new electromagnetic survey will fly lines 250 metres apart. The 2025 lines, 450 to 900 metres apart, were too sparse to map conductors and skipped the east of the project [R2]. A conductor is buried rock that conducts electricity, usually graphite in a layer or along a fault.
Wollaston Lake South and Boland Lake, Beyond the Basin Edge
The other two projects are east of the basin edge, Boland Lake about 6 kilometres beyond it and parts of Wollaston Lake South about 25 kilometres [R2]. With no sandstone over them, the target is uranium in the older basement rock under thin glacial cover. The independent geologist cites the Arrow and Triple R deposits, found 3 and 7 kilometres beyond the edge, as evidence that such deposits can survive once the sandstone erodes [R2].
At Wollaston Lake South, 366 square kilometres, a helicopter survey in February 2026 modelled 48 conductor anomalies in two belts about 6 kilometres long, BC1 and BC2 (FIG. 04). Their tops are modelled within about 100 metres of surface [R2]. The best surface result, 300 parts per million of uranium oxide from a loose boulder, is an unverified government record the independent geologist calls weakly anomalous. Both belts are still to be sampled and drilled [R2].

Boland Lake covers 206 square kilometres, about 75 per cent of it under water [R2]. Its 2026 survey found no significant conductive bedrock, so targets will come from mapping faults and rock contacts. Ice-carried boulders south-west of the project gave readings up to 15,200 counts per second, a measure of total radioactivity rather than grade [R2].
The two projects share a two-year budget of A$2,037,000 [R1]. The independent geologist proposes about 600 metres of drilling at Wollaston Lake South in the second year, and 550 metres at Boland Lake if targets are defined [R2]. Prospectus Section 5.2.2 gives Boland Lake drilling as "approximately 0 metres" against an A$200,000 drilling budget [R1].
Keeping the Claims, Deadlines in November and December
A Saskatchewan claim stays in good standing only if a set amount of work is done each year and recorded [R3]. Maverick's next deadlines fall weeks after the offer closes (TABLE 02).

Maverick has contracted Bell Geospace to fly gravity surveys over all three projects. The Boland and Wollaston Lake South survey began on 7 October and is due to finish by about 31 October, at an estimated US$413,234, about CAD$586,792 [R1][R2]. At 1.5 times credit, that is about CAD$880,000 against CAD$767,346 needed, by Samso's arithmetic. An extension is available on a cash deposit.
Maverick is relying on the Newnham Lake gravity survey, due about 7 November, for the CAD$326,764 of work needed by 6 December 2026 [R1]. That project has already had a 180-day extension, a second is not allowed, and a cash payment in place of the work cannot be made [R1][R3]. Without the work the claims lapse, unless the Saskatchewan government grants relief in narrow cases. Credit is counted claim by claim for the survey flown over each, though nearby claims can be grouped within limits [R2][R3].
Use of Funds from the MAV IPO
With cash held at 30 September 2026 and A$1,000 from the lead manager shares, Maverick will have A$7,796,676 to spend over two years (FIG. 05) [R1]. Exploration takes A$5,215,000, two-thirds. The board says more capital may be needed after two years.

Offer costs total A$873,809, of which A$774,962 was unpaid at 30 September [R1]. That is 11.7 per cent of the money raised, by Samso's arithmetic. ASX has also said it would likely accept that A$737,145.57 of payments to vendor parties, including two directors or their entities, reimburse money they spent on the projects [R1].
MAV Capital Structure, Escrow and the Uranium Team
New money buys 48.6 per cent of the shares on listing, by Samso's arithmetic (FIG. 06) [R1]. The company expects about 35.4 per cent to be escrowed for up to 24 months and puts the free float at about 62.8 per cent [R1]. ASX sets the final escrow.

Of the existing shares, 14,078,593 came from convertible notes that raised A$1,971,000 in May 2026 and converted at A$0.14, 30 per cent below the offer price [R1]. Director Jim Spaseski and associates will hold 12.19 per cent. The four directors receive 4,500,000 performance rights that vest at 20-day average prices of A$0.30, A$0.40 and A$0.50 [R1].
Mr Buck worked at Cameco from 1991 to 2006, later ran Paladin's Langer Heinrich mine and is a non-executive director of Boss Energy [R1]. Mr Borshoff founded Paladin in 1993 and grew Deep Yellow from 2016 [R5]. Interim chief executive John Shmyr is a Saskatchewan geologist supplied by Dahrouge Geological Consulting. Andrew Grove, formerly managing director of Aura Energy, is the only independent director [R1].
What Comes Next at Maverick Uranium
The gravity surveys join the 2025 and 2026 electromagnetic data as the base for drill targets [R1]. Maverick intends to lodge drilling permit applications by the end of October 2026 and then open talks on an exploration agreement with Ya'thi Néné Lands and Resources, which represents the nearby Denesuline First Nations. Permits may take two to five months [R3].
What we still need to know is whether the closer-spaced electromagnetic survey firms up the Newnham Lake conductors, and whether the Wollaston Lake South belts carry uranium. The first Newnham Lake holes are planned for February 2027 [R1].
Near-term Milestones to Watch
Bell Geospace surveys finished, due about 31 October and 7 November 2026.
Drilling permits lodged and talks opened with Ya'thi Néné.
The first Newnham Lake drilling, planned for February 2027.
Samso Concluding Comments
Among ASX uranium stocks, Maverick would offer exposure to early Athabasca exploration. The projects are early, with no resource, and the first drilling is planned for February 2027.
SAMSO TAKE We like that the money is mostly going into the ground, that the surveys are already flying, and that the chair has run a uranium mine in this basin. The near-term questions are whether the Newnham Lake gravity survey, due about 7 November, finishes in time for the 6 December deadline, and what the first holes in February 2027 show. |
THE OTHER WAY TO READ THIS Maverick has not yet drilled the three projects. The nine Newnham Lake holes of 1970 and 1980 did not intersect uranium mineralisation, and the 2026 survey at Boland Lake found no significant bedrock conductors. The Newnham Lake claims depend on a survey finishing on time in a northern autumn. More than a quarter of the shares on listing go to vendors, including two directors or their associates, and the convertible notes came in at 30 per cent below the offer price. A reader could fairly decide to wait for drilling before forming a view. |

VOCABULARY, IN PLAIN ENGLISH Athabasca Basin A large bowl of sandstone in northern Saskatchewan and Alberta, Canada, home to the world's highest-grade uranium mines. Unconformity The surface where the basin sandstone rests on much older crystalline rock. Most Athabasca uranium deposits form at or near it. Basement The older crystalline rock under the sandstone. Some deposits, such as Arrow and Triple R, are hosted in it. Conductor Buried rock that conducts electricity, usually graphite in a rock layer or a fault zone, found by electromagnetic surveys. Many Athabasca deposits lie on conductors, but not all. Gravity survey An airborne survey that measures small changes in rock density, used to map rock types and faults under cover. Diamond drilling Drilling that cuts a solid cylinder of rock, called core, for logging and assay. JORC Mineral Resource A formal estimate of tonnes and grade under the Australian reporting code. Maverick has none. Counts per second A scintillometer reading of total radioactivity. It is not a uranium grade. ppm U3O8 Parts per million of uranium oxide, the form in which uranium grade is usually reported. |
