ASX today, ASX futures flat, S&P 500 at a record

Futures point to a flat open on the ASX today. ASX 200 futures were flat at 8,765 points at 7:46am AEDT, according to ABC News. A futures contract is an agreement to buy or sell at a set price on a later date, and its price shows where traders expect the index to go. The S&P/ASX 200 closed on Tuesday at 8,735.7, up 49.3 points or 0.57%. The All Ordinaries, which tracks the 500 largest listed companies, rose 0.50% to 8,903.5. The S&P/ASX Small Ordinaries, an index of the companies ranked 101 to 300 by size, fell 0.27% to 3,305.2. The Australian dollar was buying approximately 69.8 US cents at 8:45am AEDT. ASX today: Key Highlights

Wall Street overnight

Three of the four main US share indices rose on Tuesday and one fell. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.49% to 51,521.28. The S&P 500 gained 0.58% to 7,818.93, which Yahoo Finance reported as a new record. The Nasdaq Composite gained 0.45% to 27,599.79, above its close of 27,477.31 on Monday. ABC News reported that both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite reached record highs. The Russell 2000, an index of smaller US companies, fell 0.59% to 2,830.30.

Yahoo Finance quoted Kyle Rodda, a senior financial market analyst with the broker Capital.com, on the reason. He said the rally was "tech-led once again". He said a marginal easing of uncertainty on interest rates and a slight fall in geopolitical risk, shown in a dip in crude prices, let investors focus on the earnings growth of artificial intelligence companies. ABC News reported that oil prices had stabilised at around US$100 a barrel.

The US 10-year Treasury yield closed at about 5.27%, down about 4 basis points from 5.31% on Monday. A Treasury is a US government bond. A bond yield is the yearly return from buying a government bond at today's price, and when yields fall, bond prices rise. A basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point.

Japan

The Nikkei 225 closed on Tuesday at 70,683.98, up 737.12 points or 1.05%. It had risen 2.40% on Monday. Trading Economics described the close as a three-month high. It reported that Japanese shares followed Wall Street and that softer oil prices helped. The US dollar was buying approximately 158.08 yen at 8:45am AEDT.

London and Europe

London's FTSE 100 closed on Tuesday at 10,541.69, up 0.42%. Germany's DAX gained 0.77% to 25,449.19. France's CAC 40 gained 0.40% to 7,865.07.

Currencies

The Australian dollar was buying approximately 69.8 US cents at 8:45am AEDT. It was at approximately 69.7 US cents at the same time on Tuesday. The US dollar index, which measures the US dollar against six major currencies, closed on Tuesday at 101.86, down 0.31%. The US dollar was buying approximately 158.08 yen.

Commodities

Copper futures for December closed on Tuesday at US$6.660 a pound, up 1.12%. The contract month is the month a futures contract falls due. Gold for December rose 0.86% to US$4,192.70 an ounce. Silver for December rose 1.37% to US$61.70 an ounce.

Brent crude for December closed at US$101.15 a barrel, up 0.83%. It had fallen 1.89% on Monday. West Texas Intermediate, the US oil benchmark, closed at US$89.91 a barrel for November delivery, up 0.54%. Iron ore was approximately US$91.10 a tonne, down 0.2%, according to ABC News.
