Japan and Asia
The Nikkei 225 last closed on Monday at 63,081.86, down 0.33% from Friday (Yahoo Finance data). Tokyo was closed on Tuesday for Culture Day and is due back today. The US dollar was buying 158.73 yen at 8:16am AEDT, 0.67% above Monday's close. Currencies
The Australian dollar was at 69.67 US cents at 8:15am AEDT, against 69.82 US cents at 4:33pm AEDT on Tuesday (Yahoo Finance data). The Australian dollar was buying 110.55 yen at 8:16am AEDT. The US dollar index, which measures the US dollar against a basket of six major currencies, was at 101.87 at 8:06am AEDT. The ABC said the Australian dollar was weighed down by the Reserve Bank's split decision on Tuesday to raise the cash rate. CBA, in a foreign exchange note carried by the ABC, said its economists expect that fifth rate rise of 2026 to be the last of the cycle, with risks skewed to further rises next year. It expects two, and possibly three, US Federal Reserve rate rises by March 2027, which would narrow Australia's interest rate advantage over the US.
Commodities
January Brent crude futures, the international oil benchmark, were at US$104.40 a barrel at 8:05am AEDT, 0.35% below Monday's settlement of US$104.77. December West Texas Intermediate crude futures, the US benchmark, were at US$96.73, 0.28% above Monday's settlement of US$96.46 (Yahoo Finance data). Both are prices in trade after Tuesday's settlement, so they are not Tuesday's settled move. Earlier, Brent traded up towards US$107, fell below US$101 and retraced to around US$103.7, National Australia Bank (ASX: NAB) said in a note carried by the ABC, and it described the moves as headline volatility. The note also carried a Wall Street Journal report of a US attack on Iran's Qeshm Island. It said optimism on signs of diplomacy drove the sell-off, which was pared after Iran said the US response to its demands was not satisfactory.
December gold futures were at US$3,931.70 an ounce at 8:06am AEDT, 0.95% below Monday's settlement of US$3,969.60. December silver futures were at US$49.69 an ounce, 2.35% lower.
